Vintage and Contemporary Round Mattresses

Many consumers are unsure how to select a round mattress for the beds that are sold in this same shape. Others are not even aware that such a thing as a round bed exists! This bed style first emerged as a distinctive and novel option for sleeping in the '60s, around the same time as the waterbed became popular. Its futuristic look was first thought of as a sort of gimmick, seen on television or in movies.

The round mattress became popular mostly at hotels and resorts until around 1968, when a motorized, revolving round bed called the Lullaby began to make an appearance in the bedrooms of those who were looking for something just a little different to sleep upon. It caught on with Hollywood's rich and famous in a big way. Playboy Magazine's Hugh Hefner was often photographed in his rotating round bed, a beautiful girl on either side of him. In order to be a member of the "in crowd" the ownership of a round mattress was de rigeur, and sales began to soar.

The Bond Movies

Movies such as the James Bond series and "In Like Flint" which featured round mattresses caused even more people to become interested in owning one of these beautiful showpieces. They stood for luxury with a capital "L" during this period. These movie beds featured beautiful leather and luxurious velvet or satin tufted headboards that also included lights. Some of these beds rotated, and quite a few also had a built in vibrator which enabled the actors to enjoy an all-over body massage while on camera.

Tawdry

Unfortunately, the round mattress began to be almost synonymous with certain types of sleazy movies and also was found in cheap motels which catered to a rather tawdry crowd. Round beds slowly began to fall out of fashion, partly due to these associations. Though they were still popular with some people, it became almost impossible to find a round mattress or bed, and those who were lucky enough to own a vintage round bed considered them a treasure.

The Comeback

Recently, these mattresses have began to make a successful comeback. They are considered to be very "retro" and hip, and any naughty connotations associated with a round bed seem to be a thing of the past. Round mattresses are popular with young and old. They are purchased today by those people who already own a round bed or those who really wanted one back in the Seventies. The revival of the round mattress is giving these people a chance to relive an enjoyable era in their lives. There are even contemporary round mattresses made to fit baby beds, so the whole family is able to enjoy the comfort and style of this distinctive bedding choice.

A round mattress usually is sold in a size that is considered a "Super King", measuring 84 inches in diameter, with a thickness of about 10 inches. Available as an innerspring coil mattress, or in luxurious memory foam, it is a distinctive and fun way to add a different look to the bedroom of anyone in your family.

Add a Contemporary Sophisticated and Soothing Looks To Your Bedrooms

Today we are sharing with you some of our favourite bedroom designs that we think will be inspiring to all you home owners out there!

Contemporary Modern, Trendy - We love our white bedding and curtain sets so much, but at times it looks a little lost in a space and too cold. It works far better if you are willing to use a warm neutral on the walls such as a chocolate brown; this combination makes the white more crisp and inviting. White lampshades will also look hip against the darker wall colour whilst matching your bedding. An accent colour will add spice - choose a rich red or earthy orange for decorative bed cushions and bed runner. Choose cheap accessories to play with current bedroom trends such as bamboo blinds for a natural look.

Feminine Eclectic, Soothing - You want to hint at femininity in the bedroom instead of being at war with flowers and frills. Choose a light, cool colour for walls such as a blue-grey that instantly relaxes the space. Modern forms for larger furniture and vintage items as décor will achieve that eclectic look with ease. With all the lightness on walls and in duck egg blue bedding, a dark wood floor would ground the space and make it more intimate. Do give it a touch of glam with a vintage chandelier - which woman wouldn't be happy with that?

Classic, Sophisticated - Sophisticated furniture may include dark woods and fabric headboards for the bed. The dark furniture breathes a more classic design and helps to bring warmth and depth to a neutral colour palette of white bedding and beige curtains. The end look should be opulent - but in an understated way. Give a surprise element to this room by having the bed central and at an angle, whilst letting the rest of the design promise a timeless bedroom that never fails to be admired.

Hotel Chic, Restful - Use a monochrome colour palette - but try to be different and take a colour as opposed to black with grey and white. White can be saved however in bedding, as it lends to the restfulness of this bedroom design. We like greens that start in a light shade for the walls, medium shade for accent cushions and a dark, olive green for tab top voile curtains. This is a unified look as you may find in an elegant hotel suite - add some subtle stripes to bring it to the next level.

Interior Decorating - Contemporary Style

The Contemporary Home Furnishing style is unmistakably sleek, hip, funky, and chic. By taking up a contemporary look for your home, your décor will end up being simple yet bold. There are essentially no rules to follow when using a contemporary theme, just a few basic guidelines: clean lines, neutral elements, bold color, art, and sculptured furnishings. By using these guidelines, contemporary decorating can easily be modified to reflect your personality.

In order to jump start your thinking for contemporary home furnishing there are a few things you need to keep in mind.. The color palette in a contemporary interior can be anything from a mix of neutrals, to black and white, to the use of bright and bold color. Black is often used to ground and define a contemporary room. Walls and windows look best with pastel paint colors or bold paint colors depending on what suits your personality. Make sure not to go into color overkill when decorating a room. For example, if you paint the walls a bright color, stick to neutral and simplistic furnishings and accessories. However, if you choose a basic color for walls, you can then add color into a room through the decor.

Furniture

Once you have chosen a color scheme for your room, you can begin on the interior. The most important part of the contemporary home furnishing is furniture. Contemporary furniture generally exhibits clean, smooth lines. Popular contemporary furniture includes glass and metal coffee tables, smooth leather chairs and polished wood chairs, and low beds with simple, straight headboards. Keep furniture details uncluttered. Skip bedskirts and table linens that are frilly or pleated. Tassels and fringe are too much for a contemporary look. Furniture legs look great exposed and in chunky, solid shapes. Pillows add a burst of color and texture in clean geometric shapes.

Lighting

Lighting is exceptionally important in a contemporary interior. Look for unusual fixtures with sculptural interest, clean lines, and accents of bold color or metallic. Install recessed lighting or track fixtures to wash walls with light. Nickel and glass pendant lights go great in a dining area, and look to add fluorescent lighting in the kitchen. Neon lights are also a great way to add a contemporary look to your lighting decor. Polished steel lamps with long and bendable necks and polished steel fixtures are also a great lighting accent.

Accessories

In straight contemporary interiors it is most effective to have a few large accessories well placed. Give each piece breathing room by establishing a zone of empty space around it. In choosing your accessories, there are wide variety of options such as abstract glass sculptures, primitive art and sculptures, area rugs with geometric patterns and bold colors, abstract mirrors, and glass and steel display shelves.

More Tips for Contemporary Decorating

Flower arrangements should be large, dramatic and follow simple shapes. Try to find contemporary containers and vases that will add to the sculptural look.

Plants will add a burst of life to a contemporary room. Make sure they are big, with interesting or colorful leaves. Place them in simple pots or baskets. Uplight them from the back and underneath. Cover the dirt with smooth rocks, bark chips, or colorful marbles.

Glass, metal, stone, and wood will all fit well into a contemporary interior. However, avoid a cold looking room by adding shots of warm colors and providing textural interest in fabrics, upholstery, rug, or accessories.
